Historically, it has become the norm for most UK publishers , to only allow submissions through a literary agent. This is to spare themselves being drowned in thousands of submissions and repeat submisions.
Most publishing agencies would provide any names or contact information on their websites in order to limit the number of enquiries and begging letters. I am happy to say that this situation is gradually changing for the better, as many are now beginning to open for submissions, or have designated submission windows at certain times of the year. Many publishers will accept unsolicited ‘submissions’ from even first-time (previously unpublished) authors, and others do not in order to avoid disappointment ensure you check the ‘submission guidelines’ for each publisher. check the ‘submission guidelines’ for each publisher . the ‘submission guidelines’ not only outline the length of the submission period, but they often reiterate the current direction of the publishing, and which team to send your submission to depending on its genre and type.
